Arts Integration
Collaborating across the 2nd Grade curriculum through the Arts
Students were able to create a verse to the tune of Yankee Doodle about the concepts of what makes a good citizen that they were learning about in their classroom. In music, Ms. Belanger was teaching about the art of lyric writing, including poetic meter, rhyme structure, and poetic form. Students created their own song about what makes a good citizen and took pictures to include in the video of their school community. It was awesome to see students using what they were learning in the classroom, what they were learning in music, and apply it to create a work uniquely their own. Ms. Belanger and Ms. Zygiel co-taught these concepts! Here is the Final Product- "Citizens like You and Me"

During the month of October, our class had a first time trial of Arts Integration with visual art. They learned about maps within the regular classroom and the art room. Miss Zygiel and myself (Mrs. Loritz) were just as excited as the students to dive into a fully integrated lesson, blurring the lines between social studies and art, and letting the students find the way in which they could learn the content best. The students researched in small groups, and were then able to choose a visual art option to show their understanding of maps. As teachers, we were mostly focused on the retention of information and the process of creating to deepen their understanding. So, it was quite a treat for us when they not only understood the content, but created beautiful finished pieces of art, as well. |
